A Goodyear Welted safety shoe or boot refers to a specific construction method that has been used since the late 1800's to make robust footwear. By sandwiching a strip of rubber between the upper and the bottom sole that they both get stitched to, it creates a much stronger, durable and longer lasting shoe / boot.
Not only does this method of construction mean that the footwear is more robust, it also makes them more comfortable. The cavity inside the rubber strip is filled with cork which gives you added insulation, protection and comfort. As you wear the shoes, the cork filler will take the shape of your foot, like memory foam.
A regular, quick clean and polish will keep them looking good and in great condition. Also, if the sole or heel is getting a bit worn, a cobbler can easily replace these parts and you won’t lose any of the comfort gained from the cork layer as this won’t be affected.
